Today (11th August'09) Ashwin, Priya and Leann will be heading back to Boston after our amazing year here in India. We're sending love and thanks to all our dear ones who helped make this such a wonderful experience for us. We hope that Prabhu will be joining us before long - keep your fingers crossed!
Just because we're relocating doesn't mean that we're discontinuing the blog, so stay tuned.
Summer Vacation II
Tomorrow will be Priya and Ashwin's last day at Jesse Moses School (except for Prize Day, next week - more on that later). We thought they would like to have a bit of time off before returning to the US next month and starting school in September. They've done a wonderful job - congratulations Ashwin and Priya!
Headed North
Tomorrow, May 20th, we're headed to Sikkim! So, no more blog posts until June. We're excited about seeing the Himalayas and escaping the heat (see below). We'll take lots of pictures and be back in touch soon.
Kathri Veyil
That's the Tamil phrase for the period we just entered, May 4-28, the hottest days of summer here in South India. As the Indian Express put it today "the period is synonymous with heat, power cuts, water shortage and sunstroke". Yesterday for the first time this year the temp topped 40 degrees C (or 104 F). So please, send us some cool breezes...
Happy St Patrick's Day
Although there will probably only be a small handful of folks celebrating in Chennai, we wanted to extend St Patty's day greetings to our blog followers. We're going to try to make Irish soda bread in our bread maker, and tell some stories about leprechauns. And, Nana - you look great in green!
Jai Ho (Victory)
The Oscar nominations for Slumdog Millionaire have created great interest in India. There has been lots of criticism here of the poverty potrayed in the movie. I greatly enjoyed the film and to me it was a movie about hope and joy. I am especially hoping for a AR Rahman win, having been a fan of his since the Roja soundtrack.
Happy Valentine's Day
V-Day is a bit controversial here in India. There are some radical Hindu elements who feel that celebrating "goes against traditional Indian values", and have threatened to cause trouble today. However, most people, if they take note at all, seem to view it as a just another opportunity to eat sweets, give cards and go out to celebrate. We're going to have some sweets and enjoy - hope you do too!
ENGAGEMENT CONGRATULATIONS!
We recently learned that our friends Josh and Angela as well as our friends Cephas and Anita have become engaged! The whole family is excited and would like to extend our best wishes to all four!!!
Republic Day
Tomorrow is Republic Day here in India - it marks the adoption of the Indian constitution. Another holiday for all of us - so in honor of the big day, we've redone the blog colors in the colors of the Indian flag. Jai Hind!
HAPPY 2009
We wish all our readers a happy, healthy, peaceful and prosperous New Year - with love
Prabhu, Leann, Ashwin and Priya
Happy Holidays
We would like to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, and hope that you have a peaceful, happy and festive holiday! We regret that due to the erratic mail service here, we aren't sending out Christmas cards this year, but promise to get back on track next year. In the meanwhile, hope you enjoy our blog updates.
Although Thanksgiving is not a holiday here in India, we will be having a special family dinner tomorrow night and pausing to give thanks, especially for our dear friends and family. Wishing all of you a very Happy Thanksgiving - with all our love
Leann, Prabhu, Ashwin &Priya

The White TIger
Hey, kidsinchennai would like to congratulate Aravind Adiga for winning the 2008 Booker Prize for his debut novel, The White Tiger. Awesome, amazing book - well done!
This blog is actually being written by the whole family. We will all be spending the year in Chennai, 6/08-8/09. We're blogging so that anyone that's interested will know what we're up to.
Prabhakar is an anesthesiologist and native of Chennai. He's currently working at Rainey Hospital, and enjoying getting reacquainted with lots of old friends.
Leann is an Internist who is volunteering here at the Gurunkul clinic, a clinic which provides care primarily to patients with HIV. She is enjoying learing to cook more South Indian food, and singing in the church choir here.
Ashwin is in 'Third Standard' at Jesse Moses school. He is playing tennis and soccer, and will be starting in with basketball soon. In his spare time, he enjoys playing with his Wii system.
Priya is in 'UKG' or upper kindergarden at Jesse Moses. She is a favorite wherever she goes and has made lots of new friends here.
