Scenes from Jaipur

Entering the City Palace, Jaipur

Salmon City
Next to the worlds largest sundial.
Jaipur is a fascinating city, romantically termed "the pink city" in guidebooks due to being constructed primarily of red sandstone. The 'salmon city' would seem to be a more accurate, if less romantic, description. The mughals had a big presence there, and built walled forts, palaces and one very interesting 17th century astronomical observatory (somewhat reminiscent of a de Chirico painting). Here are some photos...

We are Jen's classmates from Orono, ME. We want to know if there was a snake inside the snakecharmer's basket. We also want to know if there was anything inside the world's largest silver urn.

More questions and comments from Jen's class. We think that the second picture in this group looks like the Great Wall of China. Is the man standing next to the Silver Urn a tall man or a short man? We are trying to figure out how tall the urn is.

Dear Room 8 and Mrs. W - thanks for your great questions.
Yes, there was a snake in the basket, it was a cobra (but usually they have their fangs taken out so they cant bite!)
I looked up the silver urn in the guidebook - it is 1.6 meters tall(maybe you guys can figure how much that is in inches). It was used by Maharaja Madho Singh II to take holy water from the Ganges river to England. (A maharaja is like a prince or king. They were the rulers of Rajastan and lived in this palace).
The wall you think looks like the great wall of China surrounds the Amber fort, which was constructed in the 1590's by Maharaja Man Singh, and was the home of the Maharaja's before they decided to build the palace in Jaipur (about 11 kilometers away}.
